HUD Homeownership Program for Housing Choice Voucher Holders

If you currently receive assistance through the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) Program, you may be eligible to use your voucher toward buying a home instead of renting. HUD’s Homeownership Voucher Program is designed to help low-income families become homeowners by applying their monthly voucher assistance to mortgage payments and other homeownership expenses.

Program Highlights:

  • Use Your Voucher to Buy a Home: Instead of applying your voucher to rent, you can use it to help pay your monthly mortgage.

  • Financial Support: Assistance can cover mortgage payments, real estate taxes, insurance, and certain maintenance costs.

  • Eligibility Requirements: Generally includes at least one year of HCV participation, steady income, and completion of homeownership counseling.

  • Supportive Services: Local Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) often provide counseling and support to guide you through the homebuying process.
